AJR4,1,2 1Relating to: commending the heroic efforts of US Airways pilot Jeff Skiles in the
2Hudson River crash of flight 1549.
AJR4,1,53 Whereas, Jeff Skiles was piloting US Airways flight 1549 on Thursday, January
415, 2009, as it left New York City's LaGuardia Airport carrying 150 passengers and
5five crew members; and
AJR4,1,86 Whereas, at an elevation of 3,000 feet the plane collided with a flock of birds,
7disabling both engines just 90 seconds after takeoff as the plane was over one of the
8most densely populated cities in the world; and
AJR4,1,119 Whereas, the aircraft's first officer, Jeff Skiles, turned the plane's controls over
10to captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger III, who avoided catastrophe by successfully
11landing the airbus A320 in the icy waters of the Hudson River; and
AJR4,1,1412 Whereas, Jeff Skiles, along with Sullenberger and the rest of the crew
13successfully evacuated all 150 passengers in a water evacuation that was supported
14by Manhattan commuter ferries and New York rescue personnel; and

1Whereas, Jeff Skiles, who resides in Oregon, Wisconsin with his wife Barbara
2and children Kelly, Matthew, and James, feels that he did exactly what his colleagues
3in the airline industry do everyday—work their hardest to provide safe, comfortable
4air travel to passengers and in this case, doing their best in the circumstances they
5were given; now, therefore be it
AJR4,2,11 6Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the legislature of
7the state of Wisconsin commends the heroic actions of Jeff Skiles and the crew of US
8Airways flight 1549 in their calm and collected actions that saved the lives of 150
9passengers and avoided tragedy for so many; and wish them well in their continued
10service to the airline industry, along with all of the other men and women serving
11with them; and, be it further
AJR4,2,14 12Resolved, That the assembly chief clerk shall transmit a copy of this joint
13resolution to Jeff Skiles and his family, of Oregon, and his parents James and Deloris
14Skiles, of Verona.
