AJR99,1,2 1Relating to: calling upon the legislatures of the various states to investigate, and
2to call on the U.S. Congress to investigate, the attack on the U.S.S. Liberty.
AJR99,1,53 Whereas, on June 8, 1967, the U.S.S. Liberty, while operating in international
4waters in the eastern Mediterranean, was the target of an attack by Israel's war
5planes and torpedo boats; and
AJR99,1,86 Whereas, this attack killed 34 members of the U.S.S. Liberty's crew and
7wounded 171 other United States personnel on board, in addition to causing
8extensive damage to the ship; and
AJR99,1,119 Whereas, there continues to be controversy surrounding the attack such that
10some sailors believe the attack was deliberate and others believe the attack was a
11mistake by the Israeli military; and
AJR99,1,1412 Whereas, aircraft dispatched from aircraft carriers to aid the U.S.S. Liberty
13were recalled, in violation of United States military law, resulting in 25 of the 34
14deaths of American servicemen; and

1Whereas, the sailors and their families should have closure of this tragic attack
2and its aftermath; and
AJR99,2,43 Whereas, the U.S.S. Liberty's disaster is the only naval disaster that has never
4been fully investigated by Congress; now, therefore, be it
AJR99,2,9 5Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the Wisconsin
6legislature calls upon the legislatures of the various states to immediately
7investigate, and to ask Congress to immediately investigate, the attack on the U.S.S.
8Liberty that was perpetrated by the armed forces of the State of Israel on June 8,
91967, in order to determine the truth behind the attack; and, be it further
AJR99,2,13 10Resolved, That the Wisconsin legislature urges the legislatures of the various
11states to determine, and to ask Congress to determine, why aircraft dispatched to aid
12the U.S.S. Liberty were recalled in direct violation of U.S. military law and custom;
13and, be it further
AJR99,2,16 14Resolved, That the assembly chief clerk shall provide a copy of this joint
15resolution to the presiding officer of each house of a state legislature and to each
16member of this state's congressional delegation.
