2in the Niagara Escarpment corridor.
Analysis by the Legislative Reference Bureau
Current law authorizes the state to incur public debt for certain conservation
activities under the Warren Knowles-Gaylord Nelson stewardship 2000 program,
which is administered by the Department of Natural Resources. The state may incur
this debt to acquire land for the state for conservation activities and may award
grants to certain nonprofit conservation organizations to acquire lands for these
activities.
Under current law, priority is given to certain types of land acquisitions. These
include acquisitions along the shores of the Great Lakes, land for habitat and natural
areas, and land in the middle Kettle Moraine. This bill adds land located in the
Niagara Escarpment corridor to these priorities. The Niagara Escarpment is a
geologic feature that runs through various counties in the eastern part of the state.
For further information see the state and local fiscal estimate, which will be
printed as an appendix to this bill.
