AJR110,1,32 Whereas, Ernest Leonard (E. L.) Luther was appointed Wisconsin's first county
3Cooperative Extension agent in Oneida County in February 1912; and
AJR110,1,94 Whereas, Cooperative Extension began by providing agricultural education
5and responding to local needs, and expanded its role to providing community
6development; supporting families; promoting food safety and security, youth
7leadership, and 4-H; and providing education in natural resources,
8science-technology-math (STEM), and horticulture, including the master gardener
9program; and
AJR110,1,1310 Whereas, Wisconsin residents benefit from more than 1.3 million educational
11contacts each year through Cooperative Extension's programs, including more than
12500,000 related to agriculture and businesses, 497,000 related to families, and
13356,000 involving youth in all 72 counties in Wisconsin; and
AJR110,2,214 Whereas, the partnership of University of Wisconsin campuses and counties
15embodies the true meaning of the "Wisconsin Idea"—that the resources and

1knowledge of the university shall be extended to the people of the state wherever they
2live and work; and
AJR110,2,53 Whereas, the 100th anniversary of E. L. Luther's appointment commemorates
4the contributions of all Cooperative Extension educators to Wisconsin's growth and
5development; and
AJR110,2,96 Whereas, the vitality of today's Cooperative Extension and its national
7reputation as a thriving, well-known, and sought-out educational resource can be
8credited to the men and women of vision who accepted the challenge in 1912 to create
9the Wisconsin county extension system; and
AJR110,2,1110 Whereas, this centennial will be commemorated at public events held
11throughout the year and around the state; now, therefore, be it
AJR110,2,13 12Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the legislature
13congratulates Cooperative Extension on the occasion of its centennial.
