AJR48,1,2 Relating to: honoring Deborah Carey for being one of the nation's top small business owners.

AJR48,1,4 Whereas, Deborah, a native of Wisconsin, started her first business at the age of sixteen while she was still in high school; and

AJR48,1,7 Whereas, she went on to study marketing and graphics at Carroll College in Helena, Montana, and continued her education by studying business with the Small Business Association and Clackamus College in Portland, Oregon; and

AJR48,1,10 Whereas, Deborah, with her husband Dan, founded the New Glarus Brewing Company in 1993, making her the first woman to own and operate a brewery in the United States; and

AJR48,1,12 Whereas, she serves as a role model for women throughout the business community; and

AJR48,2,2 Whereas, after starting with a 10,000-square-foot brewing plant and raising start-up money by working with investors and even selling their home, the Careys saw their hard work pay off when they successfully opened a $21 million, 75,000-square-foot brewing plant in the village of New Glarus; and

AJR48,2,4 Whereas, Deborah employs more than 60 workers and produces over 100,000 barrels of beer that is sold only in Wisconsin; and

AJR48,2,7 Whereas, her dedication and leadership skills have made New Glarus Brewing Company a beloved cultural trademark for our state that has been named "One of the Top Ten Breweries in the World"; and

AJR48,2,11 Whereas, widely respected by her peers, Deborah was recognized for her outstanding entrepreneurial skills by being named the 2011 Wisconsin Small Business Person of the Year and runner-up for the 2011 National Small Business Person of the Year; now, therefore, be it

AJR48,2,14 Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the Wisconsin legislature recognizes Deborah Carey for her nationally renowned work at New Glarus Brewing Company and wishes her continued success in the future.
