Analysis by the Legislative Reference Bureau
Under current law, Wisconsin observes fire prevention week during the week
that contains October 8, the anniversary of the start of the Peshtigo and Chicago
fires. The National Fire Protection Association observes fire prevention week during
the week that contains October 9, the date when most of the damage in Peshtigo and
Chicago occurred. In some years, these dates occur in different weeks.
This bill changes the reference date for fire prevention week from October 8 to
October 9.
The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do
enact as follows:
SB476, s. 1 4Section 1. 995.225 (1) (intro.) of the statutes is amended to read:
SB476,2,25 995.225 (1) (intro.) The week in October during which October 8 9 falls is
6designated Fire Prevention Week and the Saturday of the preceding week at the end
7of Fire Prevention Week
is designated Wisconsin Firefighters Memorial Day. In

1conjunction with the week, appropriate observances, ceremonies, exercises, and
2activities may be held under state auspices to do all of the following:
