SJR46,1,32 Whereas, the American Cancer Society reports that breast cancer is the most
3frequently diagnosed cancer among Wisconsin women; and
SJR46,1,54 Whereas, breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in Wisconsin
5women; and
SJR46,1,86 Whereas, this year there will be 232,620 new cases of breast cancer, resulting
7in 39,970 deaths in the United States and 4,430 new cases of breast cancer, resulting
8in 690 deaths from the disease in Wisconsin; and
SJR46,1,119 Whereas, the American Cancer Society recommends yearly mammograms for
10women beginning at age 40 and clinical breast exams at least every three years for
11women in their 20s and 30s; and
SJR46,1,1412 Whereas, the national five-year relative survival rate for women diagnosed
13with breast cancer at the local stage is 98 percent while the survival rate for
14advanced breast cancer is 27 percent; and

1Whereas, the breast cancer death rate has steadily declined since 1990 and can
2be attributed to early detection by mammography and improvements in treatment;

SJR46,2,54 Whereas, most studies have shown that mammography decreases death from
5breast cancer by 20 to 30 percent; and
SJR46,2,76 Whereas, it is in the public interest to promote public awareness of the benefits
7of early detection, prevention, and treatment of breast cancer; and
SJR46,2,108 Whereas, organizations such as Susan G. Komen for the Cure have funded
9research grants and community-based outreach projects that focus on education,
10screening, and treatment; and
SJR46,2,1211 Whereas, Susan G. Komen for the Cure has raised and invested more than $1.9
12billion since its inception in 1982; and
SJR46,2,1513 Whereas, the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure has become one of the world's
14largest and most successful education and fundraising events for breast cancer that
15celebrates survivorship and honors those who have lost their battle; and
SJR46,2,1816 Whereas, it is important for the state of Wisconsin to join with its citizens
17throughout the state in recognizing the importance of this disease; now, therefore,
18be it
SJR46,2,22 19Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the members of the
20Wisconsin legislature proclaim the month of October as Breast Cancer Awareness
21Month throughout the state to promote early detection, prevention, and treatment
22of breast cancer and the shared commitment to finding a cure.
