SJR47,1,1 1Relating to: proclaiming October 2011 as Farm to School Month.
SJR47,1,42 Whereas, in 2010, Wisconsin passed legislation that included a state Farm to
3School grant program to be promoted by the Department of Agriculture, Trade and
4Consumer Protection; and
SJR47,1,75 Whereas, Farm to School programs link schools and local farms in order to
6provide schools with nutritious foods for their meals and snacks that help children
7develop healthful eating habits; and
SJR47,1,118 Whereas, children eat 20 percent more fruit and vegetables if they are in a Farm
9to School program, and programs teaching children about healthful eating habits
10and about agriculture and nutrition encourage children to develop other health
11habits that decrease childhood obesity; and
SJR47,1,1512 Whereas, Farm to School programs save Wisconsin schools money due to less
13fluctuation in local farm prices, increased participation in the meal program in which
14farm-fresh is served, and reduced costs when schools use less costly local produce
15instead of processed foods schools might otherwise use; and

1Whereas, Farm to School programs provide local farmers with new markets,
2and the variety of local crops can provide opportunities for increased community
3economic development; now, therefore, be it

5legislature proclaims October 2011 as Farm to School Month.
