AJR1,1,2 1Relating to: commending the Eagle River World Championship Snowmobile Derby
2on its 50th anniversary.
AJR1,1,53 Whereas, the Eagle River World Championship Snowmobile Derby began in
41964 as the brainchild of John Alward, Walt Goldsworthy, and Sparky Meyer in an
5effort to promote winter tourism in Eagle River; and
AJR1,1,7   6Whereas, the Derby first attracted around 5,000 spectators but now averages
7between 20,000 and 30,000; and
AJR1,1,10   8Whereas, the popularity of the local event continually grew and in 1974 it
9catapulted Eagle River into the winter sports spotlight as the Derby welcomed the
10first professional snowmobile riders' circuit, Sno Pro; and
AJR1,1,11   11Whereas, the 1975 Derby attracted a then record 40,000 spectators; and
AJR1,1,13   12Whereas, on October 3, 1985, the Decker family purchased the Derby site in an
13effort to improve the track and increase its usage; and

  1Whereas, the Decker family has helped make the Eagle River World
2Championship one of the best races and most coveted victories in all of snowmobiling;
3and
AJR1,2,7   4Whereas, the Eagle River World Championship Snowmobile Derby has been
5such a boon to Wisconsin tourism and, therefore, track owner Chuck Decker was
6awarded the prestigious "Putting Wisconsin on the Map Award" from Governor Jim
7Doyle; and
AJR1,2,10   8Whereas, the Eagle River World Championship Snowmobile Derby track owner
9Chuck Decker was also recognized federally by U.S. Representative Mark Green
10with the "Outstanding and Invaluable Service to the Community Award"; and
AJR1,2,13   11Whereas, the Eagle River World Championship Snowmobile Derby has
12provided a tremendous service to the tourism industry of northern Wisconsin over
13the past 50 years; and
AJR1,2,16   14Whereas, as it celebrates its 50th running of the Derby on January 17 to 20, the
15Eagle River World Championship Snowmobile Derby continues its storied tradition
16as one of the world's longest-running snowmobile races; now, therefore, be it
AJR1,2,20 17Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the legislature
18commends the successful history of the Eagle River World Championship
19Snowmobile Derby and joins the Decker family and the city of Eagle River in
20celebrating 50 years of success.
