AJR117,1,52 Whereas, epilepsy is a neurological disorder producing brief disturbances in the
3normal electrical functions of the brain that temporarily affects a person's
4consciousness, bodily movements, or sensations, while creating long-term effects on
5the lifestyle of individuals with epilepsy; and
AJR117,1,76 Whereas, one in 26 people will develop epilepsy and one in 10 people will have
7a seizure during his or her lifetime; and
AJR117,1,98 Whereas, epilepsy can affect anyone regardless of gender, race, age, religion,
9educational background, or socioeconomic status; and
AJR117,1,1110 Whereas, more people suffer from epilepsy than from Parkinson's disease,
11multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, and cerebral palsy combined; and
AJR117,1,1212 Whereas, epilepsy affects more than 65 million people worldwide; and
AJR117,2,213 Whereas, although there is no known cure for epilepsy, existing drug therapy,
14surgery, and other nonpharmacological treatments enable approximately 80 percent

1of individuals with epilepsy to lead normal lives with no seizures or with a significant
2reduction in seizures; and
AJR117,2,43 Whereas, epilepsy is a complex disorder that requires further research to find
4a cure, additional treatment options, and prevention; and
AJR117,2,65 Whereas, the public is often unable to recognize common seizure types or to
6respond with appropriate first aid, and
AJR117,2,107 Whereas, the annual observance of Purple Day on March 26 advocates for the
8rights, humane treatment, and appropriate education of all persons with epilepsy,
9while raising awareness in families, professionals, and the general public to better
10understand this lifelong disorder; now, therefore, be it
AJR117,2,17 11Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the legislature
12proclaims March 26, 2014, as Purple Day and invites all Wisconsinites to participate
13by wearing purple and calls upon all citizens, government agencies, public and
14private institutions, businesses, and schools to recommit their communities to
15increasing awareness and understanding of epilepsy through education while
16ensuring that all individuals with epilepsy lead a full and productive life; and, be it
17further

19resolution to the Epilepsy Foundation Heart of Wisconsin.
