AJR55,1,1 Relating to: Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month.

AJR55,1,4 Whereas, each year, over one million pregnancies in the United States end in miscarriage, stillbirth, the death of a newborn baby, or sudden infant death syndrome and one in every three pregnancies worldwide ends in loss; and

AJR55,1,6 Whereas, the loss of a child's life is a great tragedy and a traumatic event that brings a family pain, suffering, and grief; and

AJR55,1,8 Whereas, since 2002, governors of all 50 states have signed proclamations designating Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day; and

AJR55,1,14 Whereas, every year people around the world participate in the International Wave of Light which invites participants to light a candle for pregnancy loss and infant loss remembrance starting at 1900 hours on October 15 in their respective time zones, and to leave the candle burning for at least one hour to create a continuous chain of light spanning the globe for a 24-hour period in honor and remembrance of the children who die during pregnancy or shortly after birth; and

AJR55,2,3 Whereas, the loss of most pregnancies remains unavoidable, and further medical research should be supported to resolve unanswered questions and gain more insight into the causes of pregnancy loss and infant loss; and

AJR55,2,7 Whereas, Wisconsin and its residents make it their goal this October and each month thereafter to support people who have been affected by pregnancy loss and infant loss, raise more awareness of its prevalence, and attract more research into this area; and

AJR55,2,11 Whereas, designating October as Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month allows the residents of Wisconsin to recognize those bereaved mothers, fathers, and other family members, support them through their grief, and work to prevent the causes of these deaths in the future; now, therefore, be it

AJR55,2,16 Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the Wisconsin legislature hereby proclaims October 2013 as Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month across the state of Wisconsin, recognizing that families throughout our state cope with these tragedies each year, and urges the people of Wisconsin to observe this occasion with the appropriate respect and solemnity.
