AJR97,1,1 1Relating to: the life of Gordon Lyle Hinkley.
AJR97,1,52 Whereas, Gordon Lyle Hinkley, the "Granddaddy of Milwaukee Radio," was
3born on November 25, 1925, in Port Edwards, Wisconsin, and began his career by
4winning a talent competition sponsored by WFHR Wisconsin Rapids in 1941, for
5which he was offered his own Sunday piano show; and
AJR97,1,86 Whereas, Gordon Hinkley served three honorable years in the United States
7military in Europe, which included announcing for the Armed Services Radio
8Network, before working for WSAU Radio in Wausau, Wisconsin; and
AJR97,1,129 Whereas, Gordon Hinkley joined WTMJ as a morning announcer in 1950 and
10hosted a number of popular shows, including "Gordon Hinkley's Wisconsin Weekend"
11and "Invitation to Beauty," as well as, in 1961, creating and hosting "Ask Your
12Neighbor," which ran for more than 30 years; and
AJR97,2,213 Whereas, Gordon Hinkley was inducted into the Wisconsin Broadcasters
14Association Hall of Fame in 1992 and was inducted into the national Radio Hall of

1Fame in 1997, earning the recognition of nearly six thousand radio executives and
2members of the Museum of Broadcast Communications; and
AJR97,2,53 Whereas, Gordon Hinkley loved radio, and was universally beloved by his
4listeners and fellow broadcasters for being not only professional and courteous, but
5also a warm, humble, and kind person; and
AJR97,2,96 Whereas, Gordon Hinkley died on December 23, 2013, at the age of 88, and is
7survived by his high school sweetheart, Joyce Berryman, whom he married in 1943,
8as well as his three children, five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren;
9now, therefore, be it
AJR97,2,13 10Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the legislature
11commends the life of Gordon Lyle Hinkley for his dedicated radio service, which
12enriched the city of Milwaukee, the state of Wisconsin, and the United States; and,
13be it further
AJR97,2,16 14Resolved, That the assembly chief clerk shall provide a copy of this joint
15resolution to Gordon Hinkley's wife, Joyce, each of his three children, and WTMJ of
16Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
