AR20,1,1 1Relating to: proclaiming Wisconsin Diabetes Day.
AR20,1,42 Whereas, more than 26 million American children and adults, including more
3than 480,000 people living in Wisconsin, have diabetes, a serious disease that has no
4cure; and
AR20,1,65 Whereas, another 79 million Americans have pre-diabetes, a condition that
6puts them at the highest risk for developing type 2 diabetes; and
AR20,1,97 Whereas, diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly
8use insulin, a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches, and other food into
9energy needed for daily life; and
AR20,1,1110 Whereas, it is unclear what causes diabetes, but it is believed that genetics and
11behavioral factors, such as obesity and lack of exercise, appear to play roles; and
AR20,1,1312 Whereas, diabetes is the fifth-leading cause of death by disease in the United
13States; and
AR20,1,1514 Whereas, more than one-third of people with diabetes, roughly seven million
15Americans, don't know they have the disease; and

1Whereas, through public awareness, the state of Wisconsin seeks to minimize
2the effects of diabetes on all Wisconsin citizens; now, therefore, be it
AR20,2,5 3Resolved by the assembly, That the members of the Wisconsin assembly
4proclaim November 14, 2013, to be Wisconsin Diabetes Day, to promote awareness
5of this disease that affects many throughout the state.
