2Joseph James Altmann.
SJR13,1,53 Whereas, Joseph was born on December 15, 1984, in Marshfield, Wisconsin, to
4John and Janice Altmann and died on December 25, 2011, of injuries sustained when
5an insurgent attacked his unit in Kunar Province, Afghanistan; and
SJR13,1,86 Whereas, Joseph was a 2003 graduate of Columbus Catholic High School and
7attended the University of Wisconsin-Marshfield/Wood County and the University
8of Wisconsin-Marathon County; and
SJR13,1,109 Whereas, Joseph entered the United States Army and attended basic training
10at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, graduating in July 2005; and
SJR13,1,1211 Whereas, Joseph further trained as a combat medic at Fort Sam Houston in San
12Antonio, Texas, graduating in November 2005; and
SJR13,1,1513 Whereas, Joseph was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Field Artillery
14Regiment, 2nd Armored Division, Giessen, Germany, and served his first tour of duty
15in Iraq from 2006 to 2007; and

1Whereas, Joseph was assigned to Walter Reed Hospital as a medic and later
2assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team,
325th Infantry Division, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii; and
SJR13,2,74 Whereas, Joseph was awarded the Expert Field Medic Badge in October 2010
5after further training and the completion of a multi-day testing course; of the 160
6participants that started, only 12 completed the course and were awarded the badge;
7and
SJR13,2,98 Whereas, Joseph served his second tour of duty in Iraq in 2009 and started his
9third tour of duty in Afghanistan in 2011; and
SJR13,2,1110 Whereas, Joseph married Nikki Lee Nichols on February 15, 2011, in Honolulu,
11Hawaii; and
SJR13,2,1412 Whereas, Joseph embodied the Army's core values of loyalty, duty, respect,
13selfless service, honor, integrity, and personal service and will be remembered for his
14quiet demeanor and unwavering friendship; now, therefore, be it
SJR13,2,18 15Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the legislature of
16the state of Wisconsin commemorates the remarkable life of Joseph James Altmann
17and extends its deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and colleagues; and, be it
18further
SJR13,2,20 19Resolved, That the senate chief clerk shall transmit a copy of this joint
20resolution to Joseph's parents, John and Janice Altmann, and his wife, Nikki.
