SJR78,1,3 1Relating to: commending and congratulating Chancellor Richard H. Wells for his
2contributions to the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and the state of
3Wisconsin.
SJR78,1,54 Whereas, Richard H. Wells will retire from his position as chancellor of the
5University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh effective August 31, 2014; and
SJR78,1,76 Whereas, Richard H. Wells was appointed as chancellor in 2000 and is
7UW-Oshkosh's tenth, and third-longest-serving, chancellor; and
SJR78,1,98 Whereas, during his tenure, UW-Oshkosh saw a record 19 percent enrollment
9increase and a 30 percent increase in conferred degrees; and
SJR78,1,1510 Whereas, under Chancellor Wells's guidance, UW-Oshkosh enhanced its
11facilities by completing and launching approximately $320 million in construction
12projects from 2000 through 2015, blending $160 million in state investment with
13$111 million in program revenue (from residence hall fee to business service fee
14revenues) and more than $45 million in donor/university/private sector partnership
15investment; and

1Whereas, major capital projects completed under Chancellor Wells's tenure
2include the Student Recreation and Wellness Center, Horizon Village, Sage Hall, and
3the Alumni Welcome and Conference Center; and
SJR78,2,54 Whereas, Chancellor Wells's leadership has ensured that students will have a
5modern learning environment for many years to come; and
SJR78,2,86 Whereas, despite the challenges facing higher education, Chancellor Wells has
7never lost sight of the importance of a well-rounded liberal arts education and the
8capacity of institutions like UW-Oshkosh to produce value; and
SJR78,2,129 Whereas, Chancellor Wells has advocated a broad view of the role of higher
10education in the knowledge economy as a partner with the private sector to ensure
11workforce development through efforts to provide highly skilled graduates aligned
12with current and emerging careers; and
SJR78,2,1513 Whereas, Chancellor Wells has also advanced and championed economic
14development through innovative and collaborative support for new and existing
15businesses; and
SJR78,2,1816 Whereas, Chancellor Wells has been a respected voice in higher education
17throughout the state, and UW-Oshkosh has flourished under his tenure; now,
18therefore, be it
SJR78,2,22 19Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the Wisconsin
20legislature commends and congratulates Chancellor Richard H. Wells for his
21contributions to the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and to the state of Wisconsin
22and wishes him a long and healthy retirement; and, be it further
SJR78,2,24 23Resolved, That the senate chief clerk shall provide a copy of this resolution to
24Chancellor Richard H. Wells.
