SJR81,1,42 Whereas, Norway, which means "Northern Way," is the fifth-largest country in
3Europe, covering 125,052 square miles, and has a population of more than five
4million people; and
SJR81,1,65 Whereas, Norwegian immigrants have made countless contributions to the
6cultures of Wisconsin and other regions of the United States; and
SJR81,1,87 Whereas, one out of every twelve Wisconsinites claims Norwegian ancestry;
8and
SJR81,1,119 Whereas, "Syttende Mai," Norwegian for "May 17," celebrates the anniversary
10of the 1814 signing of the Norwegian Constitution that declared Norway's
11independence from Denmark; and
SJR81,1,1312 Whereas, the Norwegian Constitution is the third-oldest in the world, being
13predated only by the constitutions of the United States and France; and

1Whereas, Norwegian culture can be found throughout Wisconsin in the cuisine
2of lutefisk and lefse, in the art of rosemaling, and in the presence of wood-carved
3trolls; and
SJR81,2,84 Whereas, Wisconsin communities, such as Westby, Stoughton, Blair, Mount
5Horeb, and Woodville, will celebrate Syttende Mai in many ways, including parades,
6Norwegian displays, Norwegian street music and dancers, Syttende Mai King and
7Queen presentations, Syttende Mai runs, special museum tours, choral concerts,
8church services, and Norwegian drama; and
SJR81,2,109 Whereas, thousands of Wisconsin citizens of Norwegian heritage will
10participate in these activities during the month of May; now, therefore, be it
SJR81,2,15 11Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the Wisconsin
12legislature proclaims the weekend of May 16, 17, and 18, 2014, Syttende Mai
13Weekend in the state of Wisconsin, and declares that all citizens of this state are
14honorary Norwegians for that weekend and are urged to observe the Syttende Mai
15Weekend with appropriate celebrations.
