AJR70,1,1 Relating to: Proclaiming October as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

AJR70,1,5 Whereas, in any given year, more than 10,000,000 women and men are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States, and 1 in 3 women as well as 1 in 4 men have been or will be victims of physical violence by a partner in their lifetime; and

AJR70,1,9 Whereas, domestic violence consists of a dominant partner exerting control over a victim through physical, emotional, and psychological abuse, the effects of which can have the potential to irreparably ruin one's mental well-being, career, and relationships; and

AJR70,1,13 Whereas, many individuals experiencing domestic violence are unable to escape because of the extent of control to which the abuser subjects the victim. This control consists of threats of violence to victims or loved ones, withholding finances, and efforts to isolate victims from friends and families; and

AJR70,2,2 Whereas, because it can be difficult to recognize the signs of domestic violence and it is known that anyone from any background can be an abuser, it is paramount to assist and empower victims to escape their situation by demonstrating widespread public efforts to end domestic violence in our communities; and

AJR70,2,5 Whereas, the legislature has an opportunity to engage the public about the serious consequences domestic violence has on victims, family members, and our communities; and

AJR70,2,9 Whereas, October is designated as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month to reduce the obstacles of escaping violent relationships, build a national support network to assist victims, and foster a national discussion regarding the best measures to end domestic violence; now, therefore, be it

AJR70,2,12 Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the legislature hereby proclaims October National Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Wisconsin.
