Whereas, the Milwaukee Area Technical College has been providing degrees,
5diplomas, and life-long learning opportunities for Milwaukee area residents for over
6100 years; and

Whereas, the Milwaukee Area Technical College, since its founding, has
8represented the best of what the Milwaukee community has aspired its educational
9institutions to strive for and achieve; and

Whereas, the Milwaukee Area Technical College has successfully accepted the
11challenges presented to it by the community, from ending child labor in favor of
12continuing education, to adapting the curriculum to rapid advances in technology by
13using industry professionals to teach classes, to establishing offices and programs to
14provide courses for the rapidly growing community, and to serving as a hub for
1rapidly growing industry sectors that will define Milwaukee commerce for the next
2generation; and

Whereas, the Milwaukee Area Technical College has fully embraced the idea
4that a quality, affordable, and accessible education is key to upward social mobility
5in our community; and

Whereas, the Milwaukee Area Technical College estimates that 83 percent of
7Milwaukee Public Schools students identify as low-income and face significant
8challenges meeting the expenses that students incur when studying at
9postsecondary educational institutions; and

Whereas, the Milwaukee Area Technical College, through the MATC
11Foundation, has established the MATC Promise program, a privately funded
12program that will allow low-income students who meet certain academic standards
13to attend the Milwaukee Area Technical College tuition-free next fall; and

Whereas, the Milwaukee Area Technical College understands the unique
15challenges that many first-generation college students face upon beginning their
16studies, and will implement programs to help them take advantage of the many
17opportunities and options they will be presented with; and

Whereas, the Milwaukee Area Technical College, through the MATC Promise
19program, expects to enroll approximately 1,000 members in the initial class of
20Promise scholars and will provide the opportunity to gain an education and to
21undoubtedly realize their own version of the American dream along with countless

24Jocasta Zamarripa, on behalf of the Wisconsin Assembly, under Assembly Rule 97,
25hereby commends the Milwaukee Area Technical College for their dedicated

2through their outstanding work in creating the MATC Promise program.
