AJR90,1,3 Relating to: commending the Milwaukee Area Technical College for their dedicated commitment to students, their families, and the Milwaukee area community through their outstanding work in creating the MATC Promise program.

AJR90,1,6 Whereas, the Milwaukee Area Technical College has been providing degrees, diplomas, and life-long learning opportunities for Milwaukee area residents for over 100 years; and

AJR90,1,9 Whereas, the Milwaukee Area Technical College, since its founding, has represented the best of what the Milwaukee community has aspired its educational institutions to strive for and achieve; and

AJR90,2,2 Whereas, the Milwaukee Area Technical College has successfully accepted the challenges presented to it by the community, from ending child labor in favor of continuing education, to adapting the curriculum to rapid advances in technology by using industry professionals to teach classes, to establishing offices and programs to provide courses for the rapidly growing community, and to serving as a hub for rapidly growing industry sectors that will define Milwaukee commerce for the next generation; and

AJR90,2,5 Whereas, the Milwaukee Area Technical College has fully embraced the idea that a quality, affordable, and accessible education is key to upward social mobility in our community; and

AJR90,2,9 Whereas, the Milwaukee Area Technical College estimates that 83 percent of Milwaukee Public Schools students identify as low-income and face significant challenges meeting the expenses that students incur when studying at postsecondary educational institutions; and

AJR90,2,13 Whereas, the Milwaukee Area Technical College, through the MATC Foundation, has established the MATC Promise program, a privately funded program that will allow low-income students who meet certain academic standards to attend the Milwaukee Area Technical College tuition-free next fall; and

AJR90,2,17 Whereas, the Milwaukee Area Technical College understands the unique challenges that many first-generation college students face upon beginning their studies, and will implement programs to help them take advantage of the many opportunities and options they will be presented with; and

AJR90,2,22 Whereas, the Milwaukee Area Technical College, through the MATC Promise program, expects to enroll approximately 1,000 members in the initial class of Promise scholars and will provide the opportunity to gain an education and to undoubtedly realize their own version of the American dream along with countless scholars in the future; now, therefore, be it

AJR90,3,2 Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That Representative Jocasta Zamarripa, on behalf of the Wisconsin Assembly, under Assembly Rule 97, hereby commends the Milwaukee Area Technical College for their dedicated commitment to students, their families, and the Milwaukee area community through their outstanding work in creating the MATC Promise program.
