AJR24,1,33 Whereas, Cesar Chavez was born March 31, 1927, near Yuma, Arizona; and
AJR24,1,64 Whereas, Cesar Chavez is revered as a prominent Hispanic American civil
5rights and labor rights activist for his work organizing migrant farm workers in
6California; and
AJR24,1,87 Whereas, Chavez became a migrant farm worker in California while in middle
8school to support his family; and
AJR24,1,109 Whereas, he joined the United States Navy in 1946 and served for two years;
10and
AJR24,1,1311 Whereas, Chavez became an organizer and eventually national director of the
12Community Service Organization, where he focused on voter registration for
13Mexican Americans; and
AJR24,1,1514 Whereas, Cesar Chavez founded and ran the National Farm Workers
15Association in 1962, which became the United Farm Workers; and

1Whereas, the United Farm Workers organized thousands of migrant farm
2workers and came to represent more than 50,000 agricultural workers; and
AJR24,2,53 Whereas, Chavez through nonviolent protests, boycotts, marches, and hunger
4strikes, successfully secured union contracts and improved working conditions and
5wages for thousands of migrant farm workers; and
AJR24,2,76 Whereas, Chavez is famous for his slogan, “Si, se puede,” which is Spanish for
7“Yes, we can”; and
AJR24,2,98 Whereas, Cesar Chavez was honored following his death on April 23, 1993, by
9more than 50,000 mourners including fellow labor activists; and
AJR24,2,1110 Whereas, Cesar Chavez received the Presidential Medal of Freedom
11posthumously in 1994; now, therefore, be it
AJR24,2,14 12Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the members of the
13Wisconsin Legislature proclaim March 31, 2019, as Cesar Chavez Day in the state
14of Wisconsin.
