2celebration of the culture and traditions of U.S. residents who trace their roots
3to Spain, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and the Spanish-speaking nations of Central
4America, South America, and the Caribbean.
SJR64,1,85 Whereas, the story of Hispanics and Latinos is the story of America, in that they
6have contributed in various fields, from the arts, sciences, sports, and culture to the
7economy, have encompassed the American dream, and have brought the energy and
8drive of recent immigrants to this country; and
SJR64,1,109 Whereas, Latinos serve in government at every level, from school boards to the
10state house, from city councils and mayoral offices to Congress; and
SJR64,1,1311 Whereas, Latinos have served with honor and distinction in every conflict
12involving the United States since the Revolutionary War and have made valuable
13contributions through their service to this country; and

1Whereas, the U.S. Census Bureau estimated that by July 2015 the Hispanic
2population had surpassed 54 million people, constituting 17 percent of the total
3population of the United States, making Hispanics the largest minority group; and
SJR64,2,64 Whereas, the U.S. Census Bureau estimates that by 2060 Latino people will
5comprise over 28 percent of the total U.S. population, with 119 million residing in the
6United States; and
SJR64,2,87 Whereas, only Mexico has a larger Hispanic population than the United States;
8and
SJR64,2,109 Whereas, Puerto Rico is part of the United States and all Puerto Ricans are U.S.
10citizens; and
SJR64,2,1111 Whereas, more than 364,000 Latinos call Wisconsin home; and
SJR64,2,1212 Whereas, Latinos are the fastest growing constituency in Wisconsin; and
SJR64,2,1513 Whereas, Latino Wisconsinites are known for their strong work ethic and
14commitment to their families, and Latino Wisconsinites contribute immensely to
15many communities across this great state; now, therefore, be it
SJR64,2,19 16Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That: the members of
17the Wisconsin Legislature honor the achievements of Hispanics and Latinos in
18America and honor the many ways they continue to enrich our nation and shape our
19common future; and, be it further
SJR64,2,22 20Resolved, That following in the footsteps of Congress, the Wisconsin
21Legislature proclaims September 15 to October 15 Hispanic Heritage Month in
22Wisconsin.
