SJR79,1,3 1Relating to: recognizing The American Legion's ongoing commitment to service to
2veterans, families, the nation, the state, and their communities and
3commending the Legion on the occasion of its century of service.
SJR79,1,54 Whereas, The American Legion began with a meeting of World War I veterans
5held in Paris, France, in the spring of 1919; and
SJR79,1,96 Whereas, The American Legion was chartered by Congress on September 16,
71919, and continues to be the largest veterans service organization in the nation with
8over 1,800,000 members. The American Legion, Department of Wisconsin, has over
950,000 members and over 500 local posts; and
SJR79,1,1210 Whereas, The American Legion is responsible for the original GI Bill and has
11a proud history of fighting for legislation to improve the lives of our nation's veterans;
12and
SJR79,1,1513 Whereas, The American Legion provides programming to the youth of our
14nation. American Legion Baseball is a local and national program that develops the
15teamwork and leadership skills of youth; and

1Whereas, Boys State and Nation provides students with an educational
2opportunity to experience how state government and national government work. The
3oratorical program helps students develop public speaking skills while they study
4the United States Constitution; and
SJR79,2,65 Whereas, The American Legion, Department of Wisconsin, provides several
6thousand dollars in scholarships each year to the youth of Wisconsin; and
SJR79,2,87 Whereas, the Department Service Office assists veterans in receiving the
8benefits they earned for the sacrifices they made; and
SJR79,2,119 Whereas, The American Legion, Department of Wisconsin, operates Camp
10American Legion, which provides the northwoods experience to enable veterans to
11heal and provide a place of rest; now, therefore, be it
SJR79,2,15 12Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the legislature, in
13recognition of The American Legion's ongoing commitment to community, state, and
14nation by supporting veterans and their families, does hereby commend the
15organization upon the 100th anniversary of its founding.
