AJR59,1,2 Relating to: proclaiming May 2021 as Violence Prevention Month in the state of Wisconsin.

AJR59,1,4 Whereas, each year, thousands of individuals and families in Wisconsin bear the physical, mental, and economic costs of violence; and

AJR59,1,7 Whereas, violence takes many forms, including community violence, domestic and intimate partner violence, sexual violence and human trafficking, child maltreatment and exploitation, drug-related violence, and suicide; and

AJR59,1,10 Whereas, violence is a leading cause of injury, disability, and premature death, and merely witnessing violent incidents can result in psychological disorders, such as depression, anxiety, and stress; and

AJR59,1,15 Whereas, violence perpetuates cycles of trauma that echo across generations and discourages economic development in affected areas, thereby negatively impacting the accessibility of jobs, healthy food, and safe housing such that the Institute for Economics & Peace estimates that the direct and indirect cost of violence to the U.S. economy is $1.4 trillion per year; and

AJR59,2,2 Whereas, preventing violence requires each and every one of us working together to promote the preservation of life; and

AJR59,2,5 Whereas, prevention of violence before it occurs, as well as intervention efforts after violence has occurred, reduce its impact and prevent future perpetration and victimization; and

AJR59,2,10 Whereas, violence is preventable, and its impacts can be reduced with violence prevention strategies and increased awareness of important issues such as victimization, trauma and adverse childhood experiences, restorative justice, mentoring, and access to resources that help create safer and more resilient communities; and

AJR59,2,13 Whereas, people from across Wisconsin share a common goal in preventing violence in order to provide a peaceful and nurturing environment in which all of our children can thrive; and

AJR59,2,16 Whereas, we recognize Violence Prevention Month to promote nonviolence in the state of Wisconsin and urge all Wisconsin residents to join in the effort to reduce violence in our state; now, therefore, be it

AJR59,2,19 Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the members of the Wisconsin Legislature proclaim May 2021 as Violence Prevention Month in the State of Wisconsin.
