AJR68,1,1 Relating to: proclaiming June 2021 as Immigrant Heritage Month.

AJR68,1,5 Whereas, since Ole and Lena arrived from Norway to farm the Northwoods of Wisconsin to the immigration of Giannis Antetokounmpo from Nigeria via Athens to win two MVPs, the State of Wisconsin has been formed and enriched by waves of immigrants from every corner of the world; and

AJR68,1,10 Whereas, early in our history our state was populated by immigrants from Germany, Norway, Sweden, and Poland, by 2018, immigrants who primarily came from Mexico, Laos, China, and the Philippines comprised 5 percent of all Wisconsin residents, and an additional 5 percent of us had at least one parent who was an immigrant; and

AJR68,1,14 Whereas, our state's 290,000 immigrants from all corners of the globe — Africa, Asia, Europe, South and Central America, and Australia — play an important role in Wisconsin's economy, earning a combined household income of $9.8 billion and paying $970 million in state and local taxes each year; and

AJR68,2,4 Whereas, immigrants account for almost 25 percent of the agricultural workforce and 15 percent of the information technology workforce and have established businesses with over $9 billion in sales and employing 55,000 workers; and

AJR68,2,8 Whereas, despite these important and unique economic, social, and cultural contributions made by each wave of migration over 200 years, the role of immigrants in building our state in the past and today is often overlooked and undervalued due to ignorance, racism, and xenophobia; and

AJR68,2,12 Whereas, this month Wisconsinites should join together in a spirit of unity and kindness and reject prejudice against immigrants regardless of their legal status or their nation of origin and instead celebrate their ongoing contributions to every community and the state; now, therefore, be it

AJR68,2,14 Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the Wisconsin Legislature proclaims June 2021 as Immigrant Heritage Month.
