AJR21,1,33 Whereas, Cesar Chavez was born March 31, 1927, near Yuma, Arizona; and
AJR21,1,64 Whereas, Cesar Chavez is revered as a prominent Hispanic-American civil
5rights and labor rights activist for his work organizing migrant farm workers in
6California; and
AJR21,1,87 Whereas, Chavez became a migrant farm worker in California while in middle
8school to support his family; and
AJR21,1,109 Whereas, he joined the United States Navy in 1946 and served for two years;

AJR21,1,1311 Whereas, Chavez became an organizer for and eventually the national director
12of the Community Service Organization, where he focused on voter registration for
13Mexican Americans; and
AJR21,1,1514 Whereas, Cesar Chavez founded the National Farm Workers Association in
151962, which became the United Farm Workers; and

1Whereas, the United Farm Workers organized thousands of migrant farm
2workers and came to represent more than 50,000 agricultural workers; and
AJR21,2,53 Whereas, Chavez, through nonviolent protests, boycotts, marches, and hunger
4strikes, successfully secured union contracts and improved working conditions and
5wages for thousands of migrant farm workers; and
AJR21,2,76 Whereas, Chavez's United Farm Workers is famous for the slogan, “Si, se
7puede,” which is Spanish for “Yes, we can”; and
AJR21,2,98 Whereas, Cesar Chavez was honored following his death on April 23, 1993, by
9more than 50,000 mourners, including fellow labor rights activists; and
AJR21,2,1110 Whereas, Cesar Chavez received a posthumous Presidential Medal of Freedom
11in 1994; now, therefore, be it

13Wisconsin Legislature proclaim March 31, 2023, as Cesar Chavez Day in the state
14of Wisconsin.
