Whereas, the Good Friday Agreement, reached on April 10, 1998, sought to end
3a decades-long period of politically-motivated violence in Northern Ireland, known
4as the Troubles, which took the lives of more than 3,500 people; and

Whereas, April 10, 2023, marks the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday
6Agreement, which, despite some outstanding issues, has been a considerable
7success; and

Whereas, many on the Emerald Isle owe their lives to the agreement, which has
9benefitted from the implementation and ongoing support from the governments of
10Ireland and the United Kingdom; and

Whereas, the agreement's success has been bolstered by the continuous
12bipartisan support of successive U.S. presidents, the U.S. Congress, state legislators,
13and other elected officials working in partnership with the governments of Ireland
14and the United Kingdom; and

1Whereas, the Good Friday Agreement acknowledged the legitimacy of two
2differing political positions—support for Irish unity and support for Northern
3Ireland remaining part of the United Kingdom—and the ability of both groups to
4pursue their goals; and

Whereas, the Good Friday Agreement was a significant turning point,
6providing the Irish people with a political framework to address their future and a
7framework for lasting peace in Northern Ireland; and

Whereas, the Good Friday Agreement represented a democratic and peaceful
9means of resolving differences; now, therefore, be it

assembly, That the members of the Wisconsin Assembly
11celebrate links between Americans and the Irish people; and, be it further

12Resolved, That the members of the Wisconsin Assembly give thanks for
13continued peace and national cooperation upon the 25th anniversary of the Good
14Friday Agreement.
