SJR19,1,42 Whereas, Earth Day is an annual event celebrated around the world on April
322 to demonstrate support for environmental conservation while recognizing the
4protection of our land, water, and air; and
SJR19,1,75 Whereas, Earth Day was founded by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin,
6who called for a “national teach-in on the crisis of the environment” to be held on
7April 22, 1970; and
SJR19,1,108 Whereas, Senator Nelson aimed to send a message to Washington, DC, from
9people across the nation that public opinion called for clean water and air and the
10protection of our environment; and
SJR19,1,1311 Whereas, the first Earth Day motivated 20 million Americans, including 2,000
12colleges, to organize together to advocate for a diverse array of solutions to climate
13challenges; and
SJR19,2,314 Whereas, Senator Nelson's leadership and the impacts of the first Earth Day
15went on to produce the Environmental Decade, which ushered in the support of

1environmental legislation such as the National Environmental Policy Act, the
2Endangered Species Act, and stringent amendments to strengthen the Clean Air and
3Clean Water Acts; and
SJR19,2,64 Whereas, Earth Day is now celebrated in 193 countries around the world,
5creating opportunities for civic engagement and community collaboration to leave a
6more prosperous natural environment for generations to come; and
SJR19,2,107 Whereas, April 22, 2023, is the 53rd anniversary of Earth Day and events will
8take place across Wisconsin and worldwide to encourage actions on behalf of our
9planet to safeguard our natural resources and protect our environment; now,
10therefore, be it
SJR19,2,14 11Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the members of the
12Wisconsin Legislature honor April 22, 2023, as the 53rd anniversary of Earth Day
13and encourage Wisconsinites to continue actions to preserve our environment for all
14to enjoy.
