AJR82,1,33Whereas, the story of Hispanics and Latinos is the story of America; and AJR82,1,54Whereas, Hispanics and Latinos contribute to the economy, arts, sciences, 5sports, and culture in the United States; and AJR82,1,76Whereas, Latinos serve in government at every level, from school boards to the 7state house, from city councils and mayoral offices to the U.S. Congress; and AJR82,1,98Whereas, Latinos have served with honor and distinction in every conflict 9involving the United States since the Revolutionary War; and AJR82,1,1210Whereas, the 2020 U.S. Census revealed that the Hispanic population had 11surpassed 62 million people, constituting nearly 19 percent of the total population 12of the United States; and AJR82,1,1313Whereas, about 450,000 Latinos call Wisconsin home; and AJR82,2,214Whereas, this figure includes JoCasta Zamarripa, who became the first
1Latina elected to the Wisconsin Legislature in November 2010 and later became a 2member of the Milwaukee Common Council; and AJR82,2,53Whereas, this figure also includes Judge Pedro Colón, who was the first Latino 4elected to the Wisconsin Legislature in November 1998 and was sworn in as the 5state’s first Latino appellate court judge in November 2023; now, therefore, be it AJR82,2,96Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the members of 7the Wisconsin Legislature honor the achievements of Hispanics and Latinos in 8America and honor the many ways they continue to enrich our nation and shape our 9common future; and, be it further AJR82,2,1110Resolved, That the Wisconsin Legislature proclaims September 15 to 11October 15, 2025, as Hispanic Heritage Month in Wisconsin.
