SJR63,1,42Whereas, since 1937, the observation of Dairy Month in June has given 3Wisconsinites an opportunity to recognize the special role dairy has played in the 4state’s agricultural heritage; and SJR63,1,75Whereas, as early as the 1840s, dairy farmers from New York, then the 6nation’s leading dairy producer, migrated to Wisconsin and established a foothold 7for the dairy industry; and SJR63,1,108Whereas, in 1872, the Wisconsin Dairyman’s Association was founded with 9the goal of improving methods of making, selling, and marketing dairy products 10such as cheese and butter; and SJR63,1,1411Whereas, at the turn of the century, Wisconsin’s own Stephen Babcock 12developed a means to test the butterfat content of milk, which revolutionized the 13dairy industry by enabling standards of quality that could be used to establish milk 14prices; and SJR63,2,2
1Whereas, by the onset of World War I, Wisconsin surpassed all other states in 2dairy production; and SJR63,2,43Whereas, starting in 1940, Wisconsin cemented its reputation as “America’s 4Dairyland” by placing this slogan on license plates; and SJR63,2,65Whereas, today, over 1.28 million cows across nearly 6,000 dairy farms call 6Wisconsin home; and SJR63,2,87Whereas, the dairy industry contributes about $45.6 billion to the state 8economy annually; and SJR63,2,109Whereas, as a key part of this industry, Wisconsin cheesemakers produce over 10600 kinds of cheese and together produce over a quarter of the nation’s cheese; and SJR63,2,1311Whereas, because it has touched so many Wisconsinites’ lives, past and 12present, the dairy industry is a central component of Wisconsin heritage and 13identity; and SJR63,2,1614Whereas, in the month of June, the people of Wisconsin acknowledge the 15contributions of the state’s hardworking dairy farmers, who have made dairy a 16pillar of the state’s success; and SJR63,2,1817Whereas, these dairy farmers’ unwavering dedication to the highest standards 18of quality have consistently moved Wisconsin forward; now, therefore, be it SJR63,2,2019Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the legislature 20hereby proclaims June as Dairy Month in Wisconsin.
