ASSEMBLY SUBSTITUTE AMENDMENT 3, To 1995 ASSEMBLY RESOLUTION 29

AR29-ASA3,1,1 Relating to: commending Shannon Faulkner.

AR29-ASA3,1,4 Whereas, Shannon Faulkner, refusing to surrender to adversity and rejection, attempted for 2 1/2 years to enroll in the Citadel, the South Carolina state military college; and

AR29-ASA3,1,7 Whereas, Shannon Faulkner's courageous enterprise was crowned with success when she was admitted as the first woman cadet in the 152-year history of the Citadel cadet corps; and

AR29-ASA3,1,10 Whereas, Shannon Faulkner left the Citadel in August 1995, when it became apparent that continuing the course of study posed serious risk to her physical health; and

AR29-ASA3,1,15 Whereas, Shannon Faulkner's departure from the Citadel ended her quest to follow in the footsteps of Rebecca Marier, whose June 1995 graduation from the United States Military Academy made her the first woman to complete the course of study at West Point ranked number one in her cadet class, in the academy's 19 years of accepting female members of the corps; now, therefore, be it

AR29-ASA3,2,6 Resolved by the assembly, That the members of the Wisconsin assembly commend Shannon Faulkner for her commitment and persistence in gaining admission to the Citadel; salute her high aspirations in emulating those women who have completed the rigorous training and educational programs of U.S. military schools; express their sorrow at the untimely end of her Citadel career; and wish her the best in her future endeavors; and, be it further

AR29-ASA3,2,10 Resolved, That the assembly chief clerk shall provide a copy of this resolution to Shannon Faulkner, the members of Wisconsin's congressional delegations, the U.S. Secretary of Defense, the speaker of the South Carolina General Assembly and the attorney general of South Carolina.
