TO 1997 SENATE BILL 520

SB520-SA1,1,11 At the locations indicated, amend the bill as follows:
SB520-SA1,1,2 21. Page 2, line 1: before that line insert:
SB520-SA1,1,3 3" Section 1. 59.26 (8) (b) 1. of the statutes is amended to read:
SB520-SA1,2,74 59.26 (8) (b) 1. The persons appointed shall hold the office of deputy sheriff on
5good behavior. In any county operating under this subsection, but not under s. 59.52
6(8), whenever the sheriff or undersheriff or a majority of the members of a civil
7service commission for the selection of deputy sheriffs believes that a deputy has
8acted so as to show the deputy to be incompetent to perform the duties of deputy
9sheriff or to have merited suspension, demotion or dismissal, the sheriff,
10undersheriff or civil service commission shall report in writing to the grievance
11committee setting forth specifically the complaint against the deputy, and, when the
12party filing the complaint is a sheriff or undersheriff, may suspend or demote the
13officer at the time such complaint is filed. Notwithstanding the provisions for a

1hearing and for grievance committee action under subd. 3. no hearing may be held,
2nor may the grievance committee take any action, on the sheriff's or undersheriff's
3suspension of a deputy unless a hearing is requested by the deputy.
The grievance
4committee shall be appointed in the same manner and at the same time as standing
5committees of the board are appointed. The committee may be made up of members
6of the board or other electors of the county, or both. Such members shall be paid in
7the same manner as members of other board committees.".
