1995 Senate Joint Resolution 49
ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: commending the City of Milwaukee on its 150th anniversary.
Whereas, Solomon Juneau, Byron Kilbourn and George Walker established adjoining settlements in the early 19th century in the southeastern section of what is now the state of Wisconsin; and
Whereas, those 3 settlements, Juneautown, Kilbourntown and Walker's Point, were joined and chartered by the Wisconsin territorial legislature as the City of Milwaukee; and
Whereas, the charter took effect on January 31, 1846; and
Whereas, during the past 150 years, the City of Milwaukee has evolved into one of the finer cities in the United States; and
Whereas, the City of Milwaukee is internationally known as the "City of Festivals" and is the home of the Great Circus Parade, Summerfest and 10 ethnic festivals; and
Whereas, from Bayview to Clarke Square; from Halyard Park to Brewer's Hill; from Riverwest to Walker's Point; from Sherman Park to Jackson Park; and from Washington Heights to Lindsay Park, Milwaukee is a city of strong neighborhoods; and
Whereas, Miller Brewing, Master Lock, Harley Davidson, Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance, Allen Bradley, A.O. Smith, Firstar Corporation, Universal Foods, Marshall & Ilsley, and many other large and small businesses call Milwaukee home; and
Whereas, the combined annual attendance at Milwaukee's major cultural events and sites, including the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, the Milwaukee Repertory Theater, the Milwaukee Ballet, and the Milwaukee Art Museum, is over 1,000,000 people; and
Whereas, the Ko-Thi Dance Company, the Trinity Irish Dancers and Theater X are 3 of the many Milwaukee performing art groups that have earned international reputations for excellence; and
Whereas, Milwaukee is home to the Brewers, the Bucks, the Admirals and the Wave, as well as to the Milwaukee Kickers Soccer Club — the largest soccer club in the United States, and the Petit National Ice Center; and
Whereas, nine colleges and universities are located within the City of Milwaukee; and
Whereas, Fortune magazine recognized Milwaukee's Choice Program as a viable educational alternative, and Financial World magazine recognized Milwaukee as one of the 10 best managed cities in the United States; and
Whereas, in 1996, the City of Milwaukee will be celebrating its 150th birthday; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the members of the Wisconsin legislature congratulate the residents of the fine City of Milwaukee as they celebrate their city's sesquicentennial anniversary and extend to Milwaukee and its citizens their best wishes for another prosperous 150 years; and, be it further
Resolved, That the senate chief clerk shall provide a copy of this joint resolution to Mayor John Norquist of the City of Milwaukee, to the Milwaukee Common Council president and to each member of the Milwaukee Common Council.
