1997 Assembly Joint Resolution 28
ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: declaring the week of February 24, 1997, African-American Cultural Heritage Week.
Whereas, African-Americans have both maintained a rich distinctive culture and have made major contributions to American culture in general; and
Whereas, through the contributions of such African-Americans as the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., El-Hajj Malik El-Shabbazz, Shirley Chisholm and Reverend Jesse Jackson, America's views of itself and of the world have grown to incorporate new ideas and directions; and
Whereas, through the contributions of African-American musicians and writers; such as Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Leontyne Price, Andre Watts, James Baldwin, Richard Wright and Toni Morrison; the American culture has been enriched and appreciated around the world; and
Whereas, African-American sports figures, such as Reggie White of the Green Bay Packers, have demonstrated their ability to be not only role models for their teams, but also role models off the field for the state and the nation; and
Whereas, African-Americans have kept alive and derived pride and unity from other aspects of their cultural traditions; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the members of the Wisconsin legislature commend African-Americans for their cultural achievements and recognize the value of those achievements to African-Americans and to other Americans; and, be it further
Resolved, That in order to encourage everyone in this state to recognize and salute the richness of African-American culture, the members of the Wisconsin legislature declare the week of February 24, 1997, "African-American Cultural Heritage Week".
