2005 Senate Joint Resolution 42
ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: the life and service of Lance Corporal John Mattek Jr. of the United States Marine Corps who lost his life during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Whereas, Lance Corporal John Mattek Jr. was born on September 12, 1980, in Antigo, Wisconsin, and died on June 13, 2005, as a result of injuries suffered when a roadside bomb exploded outside of his Humvee as part of combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq; and
Whereas, Lance Corporal Mattek was a member of the United States Marine Corps, 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, Regimental Combat Team-2, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, out of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina; and
Whereas, Lance Corporal Mattek was a 1999 graduate of Antigo High School, where he served as class president his freshman, sophomore, and senior years, was the student council president, and participated in football, wrestling, and track; and
Whereas, Lance Corporal Mattek attended the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, where he played football and rugby; and
Whereas, after the war in Iraq broke out in March 2003, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps so he could serve his country; and
Whereas, Lance Corporal Mattek provided faithful and honorable service to the people of the state of Wisconsin and the people of the United States; and
Whereas, the people of Wisconsin mourn the death of Lance Corporal Mattek; and
Whereas, Lance Corporal Mattek was laid to rest on June 20, 2005, at the St. Wencel's Catholic Church Cemetery in Neva; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the legislature of the state of Wisconsin commemorates the remarkable life of Lance Corporal John Mattek Jr. and extends its deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and colleagues; and, be it further
Resolved, That the senate chief clerk shall transmit a copy of this joint resolution to Lance Corporal Mattek's parents, John and Marsha Mattek of Deerbrook; sisters, Jill Mattek of Deerbrook and Katie Devore of Bryant; brother, Matt Mattek of Deerbrook; paternal grandmother, Phyllis Mattek of Deerbrook; and maternal grandfather, James LaHam of Deerbrook.
