2005 Senate Joint Resolution 43
ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: declaring the week of October 31st Child Survival Week in the state of Wisconsin.
Whereas, 10 million children under the age of 5 die annually around the world; and
Whereas, two-thirds of the 10 million deaths of children under the age of 5 have been deemed preventable by leading health organizations through the use of existing, cost-effective solutions; and
Whereas, the United Nations declared as one of the 8 Millennium Development Goals to "Reduce by two thirds the mortality rate among children under five"; and
Whereas, reaching the age of 5 significantly increases a child's chance of survival; and
Whereas, child survival is a key element of global health and is of utmost importance to the United States and all countries of the world; and
Whereas, the people of the state of Wisconsin recognize the importance of global issues; and
Whereas, the people of the state of Wisconsin recognize the uniqueness of children and care about the fate of their lives both in their state and country and around the world; and
Whereas, PBS will broadcast a documentary entitled "Rx for Survival - A Global Health Challenge" that will examine topics in global health; and
Whereas, local public broadcasting stations around the U.S., including Wisconsin Public Television, will spearhead an impact campaign designed to raise awareness of issues of global health and child survival; and
Whereas, Wisconsin Public Television will host events in the Dane County area throughout the month of October; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the legislature of the state of Wisconsin hereby declares the week of October 31st as Child Survival Week.
