2007 Assembly Joint Resolution 87
ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: the life and public service of Jane R. Henkel.
Whereas, Jane R. Henkel was born on March 21, 1942, in Madison, Wisconsin, and died on December 11, 2007, in Madison; and
Whereas, she graduated from Wisconsin High School in Madison and then graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1964 with a degree in mathematics; and
Whereas, Ms. Henkel was employed as a computer programmer at the National Accelerator Lab/Physical Science Lab and then at the University of Wisconsin Computing Center; and
Whereas, she later attended the University of Wisconsin Law School, serving on the Wisconsin Law Review and graduating cum laude in 1973; and
Whereas, Ms. Henkel began work for the Legislative Council Staff in November 1976 and served in the capacities of Staff Attorney, Senior Staff Attorney, Deputy Director, and Acting Director until her retirement in January 2000; and
Whereas, many legislators and legislative staff benefited from her perceptive analyses of complex issues, including the performance of crucial staff work in helping to develop statutes relating to school district boundary changes, open enrollment, truancy, public libraries, alcohol beverage laws, educational communications technology, and many other subjects; and
Whereas, Ms. Henkel also served as legal counsel to the Joint Committee on Employment Relations; and
Whereas, Jane R. Henkel served as a teacher and mentor for many at the Legislative Council Staff and served as an excellent example of a hard-working, dedicated public servant who provides high quality service to the legislature; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the members of the Wisconsin legislature commend the devoted public service that Jane R. Henkel contributed to this state, express their sorrow at her death, and extend their condolences to her family and friends; and be it further
Resolved, That the assembly chief clerk shall provide a copy of this joint resolution to Jane R. Henkel's husband, James Henkel, of Fitchburg, Wisconsin.
