ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: the life and public service of Daniel O. Trainer.
Whereas, on December 8, 2007, Daniel O. Trainer, of Stevens Point, Wisconsin, passed away following a remarkable life dedicated to education and the preservation of Wisconsin's pristine natural resources; and
Whereas, Daniel bravely served his county in the United States Navy during World War II; and
Whereas, following his service in the United States military, Daniel received his Bachelor of Science degree from Ripon College in 1950, his Masters degree in microbiology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1955, and his doctorate in veterinary science and microbiology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1961; and
Whereas, Daniel served as a renowned scientist in the area of wildlife disease while on the Veterinary Science faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, creating the first graduate program in environmental diseases in the process; and
Whereas, following his tenure at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Daniel was chosen to serve as the Dean of the School of Natural Resources at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, a post which he held for 17 years until his retirement in 1988; and
Whereas, during his tremendously successful tenure at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, Daniel helped to build the largest undergraduate college of natural resources in the country, overseeing the education of over 5,000 professionals now working in natural resource management; and
Whereas, following his career in academics, Daniel received a number of honors and accolades, including Ripon College's Distinguished Alumni Award in 2005, serving as a Department of Natural Resources Board Member and Vice Chair, induction into the Wisconsin Conservation Hall of Fame in 2006 (an organization which he helped to create), and most recently, Daniel was honored by the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point through the dedication of the Daniel O. Trainer Natural Resources Building; and
Whereas, even in retirement, Daniel worked tirelessly on a number of environmental causes, including the River Alliance of Wisconsin, the Wisconsin Natural Resources Foundation (a foundation which he chaired), the Public Intervener Advisory Committee, Intra-State Recycling Corp., the Stevens Point Area Community Foundation, the Wisconsin Wildlife Federation, the Portage County Park Board, the Portage County Foundation, the Audubon Society, Ducks Unlimited, Kiwanis, the development of the 25 mile Green Circle Trail around the City of Stevens Point, and the Plover River Alliance; and
Whereas, Daniel Trainer was a beloved teacher and mentor, to hundreds of natural resource students and natural resource management professionals; and
Whereas, Daniel is survived by his wife, Betty, their two children, Patricia and Daniel, and his three grandchildren, Eric, Margo, and Logan; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the legislature of the state of Wisconsin commemorates the remarkable life of Daniel O. Trainer and extends its deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and colleagues.
