ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: the life and public service of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
Whereas, Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher was born October 13, 1925, in the town of Grantham, Lincolnshire, England, and passed on April 8, 2013; and
Whereas, Prime Minister Thatcher, an outspoken world leader known to many as "The Iron Lady," became Europe's first female prime minister in 1979; and
Whereas, Thatcher served for the longest continuous period in office by a British prime minister since the early 19th century; and
Whereas, Prime Minister Thatcher was an example of strength and character, and a great ally who fortified the special relationship between the United Kingdom and the United States; and
Whereas, Thatcher fervently battled against communism and saw the Berlin Wall torn down in 1989; and
Whereas, she implemented sweeping reforms to trade unions and transferred large sections of the economy from public control to private ownership; and
Whereas, she is credited with transforming the British economy through reforming and modernizing its industries; and
Whereas, Margaret Thatcher was a champion of individual liberty and economic freedom and her belief in hard work helped lead Britain into prosperity; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the members of the Wisconsin legislature commend the devoted and extraordinary public service Margaret Thatcher contributed to her country and to the world, and express their sorrow at her death.
