SB595,1,2 1An Act to amend 95.21 (2) (a); and to create 95.21 (9m) of the statutes; relating
2to:
sale of rabies vaccine and rabies vaccination of dogs.
Analysis by the Legislative Reference Bureau
Under this bill, a person may not sell rabies vaccine to a purchaser who is going
to administer the rabies vaccine unless the purchaser is a veterinarian.
Under current law, the owner of a dog must have the dog vaccinated against
rabies within 30 days after the dog reaches 4 months of age. Under this bill, the
owner of a dog must have the dog vaccinated against rabies after the dog reaches 3
months of age and before the dog reaches 5 months of age.
The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do
enact as follows:
SB595, s. 1 3Section 1. 95.21 (2) (a) of the statutes is amended to read:
SB595,2,54 95.21 (2) (a) Requirement for vaccination. Except as provided in s. 174.054, the
5owner of a dog shall have the dog vaccinated against rabies by a veterinarian within
630 days
after the dog reaches 4 3 months of age and before the dog reaches 5 months
7of age
and revaccinated within one year after the initial vaccination. If the owner
8obtains the dog or brings the dog into this state after the dog has reached 4 5 months
9of age, the owner shall have the dog vaccinated against rabies within 30 days after
10the dog is obtained or brought into the state unless the dog has been vaccinated as

1evidenced by a current certificate of rabies vaccination from this state or another
2state. The owner of a dog shall have the dog revaccinated against rabies by a
3veterinarian before the date that the immunization expires as stated on the
4certificate of vaccination or, if no date is specified, within 3 years after the previous
5vaccination.
SB595, s. 2 6Section 2. 95.21 (9m) of the statutes is created to read:
SB595,2,97 95.21 (9m) Sale of rabies vaccine. No person may sell or otherwise supply
8rabies vaccine for administration by the purchaser unless the purchaser is a
9veterinarian.
