SJR25,1,2 1Relating to: memorializing Congress to allow interstate marketing of
2state-inspected meat.
SJR25,1,63 Whereas, the Federal Wholesale Meat Act of 1967 allows states to have state
4meat inspection programs which are required to meet or exceed federal inspection
5standards of the U.S. Department of Agriculture for wholesomeness, cleanliness and
6food safety; and
SJR25,1,97 Whereas, 27 states, including Wisconsin, have elected to operate equivalent
8meat inspection programs which allow state-licensed and state-inspected meat
9processing facilities to engage in intrastate commerce; and
SJR25,1,1410 Whereas, state-inspected meat and poultry products are currently barred from
11interstate commerce under federal law, including neighboring local markets in other
12states, despite current meat safety and quality assurances, affecting long-range
13rural development and economic growth strategies within the meat processing
14industry; and
SJR25,1,1715 Whereas, current policy of the National Association of State Departments of
16Agriculture supports the interstate shipment of state-inspected meat products
17through reciprocal agreements with other states; now, therefore, be it

1Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the members of the
2Wisconsin legislature memorialize Congress to enact revisions to the Federal Meat
3Inspection Act and the Poultry Products Inspection Act to allow states to enter into
4reciprocal agreements to permit the interstate shipment and marketing of meat
5products within states that are party to those agreements, if the meat products meet
6state and federal quality standards; and, be it further
SJR25,2,9 7Resolved, That the senate chief clerk shall provide copies of this joint
8resolution to each member of this state's congressional delegation, to the U.S. House
9and Senate Committees on Agriculture and to the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture.
