SJR47,1,2 Relating to: commending the Green Bay Packers for their accomplishments during the past season.

SJR47,1,5 Whereas, at the beginning of the 1995-96 season, football prognosticators and analysts predicted that the Packers would fall short of the success they enjoyed in previous years; and

SJR47,1,7 Whereas, Packer fans wondered whether, but never doubted that, the team could succeed despite the loss of key players during the off-season; and

SJR47,1,9 Whereas, Packer players knew, and never doubted, that they could overcome any obstacle if they practiced and played as a team; and

SJR47,1,11 Whereas, Packer management and coaches believed, and never doubted, that their players had the talent and team attitude to compete and win; and

SJR47,1,14 Whereas, the team started the regular season strong and finished strong, including a last-minute thriller against the Pittsburgh Steelers before their loyal fans at Lambeau Field on Christmas Eve; and

SJR47,1,16 Whereas, winning the last regular season game clinched the team's first National Football Conference Central Division title since 1972; and

SJR47,2,2 Whereas, LeRoy Butler's practice of jumping into the crowd following a Packer score has now become a Lambeau Field tradition; and

SJR47,2,5 Whereas, the ghost of Terdel Middleton's 1978 season was exonerated by Edgar Bennett, who, assisted by the blocking of a superb offensive line, rushed for over 1,000 yards; and

SJR47,2,8 Whereas, Robert Brooks ran sterling routes and made sharp catches that made fans forget the name of that player who started at wide receiver last season for the Packers; and

SJR47,2,11 Whereas, by the grace of God, Reggie White rose up from a season-ending injury and was healed, just as the wounds of losing seasons past have been healed; and

SJR47,2,14 Whereas, Brett Favre, the National Football League's Most Valuable Player, has solidified his position as a Packer legend, joining the company of Bart Starr, Paul Hornung, Ray Nitschke and other Packer greats; and

SJR47,2,17 Whereas, home field play in 1995 was closed in celebratory fashion with a convincing Packer victory over the Atlanta Falcons on the frozen tundra of Lambeau Field; and

SJR47,2,20 Whereas, the Packers dominated the defending Super Bowl champions in an impressive second-round playoff win that proved to the entire football world that the Pack is back; and

SJR47,2,23 Whereas, despite a valiant effort, the Packers' season and the hopes of their fans came to a bitter end in the National Football Conference Championship Game against the Dallas Cowboys; and

SJR47,3,2 Whereas, although the season ended with a loss, the accomplishments of the team are much more impressive, considering their success has been achieved during an era of unrestricted free agency, team moves, greedy owners and disloyal players; and

SJR47,3,5 Whereas, Packer fans, who are known and respected as the most faithful in all of professional football, stood by and, at times, lifted up members of the team in the end zone; and

SJR47,3,9 Whereas, Packer President Bob Harlan; General Manager Ron Wolf; Head Coach Mike Holmgren; the entire coaching staff; the players; every member of the Packer organization; and the fans will continue to strive to help make the team the best in the National Football League; now, therefore, be it

SJR47,3,14 Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the legislature of the state of Wisconsin commends the Green Bay Packers, who have concluded the franchise's most successful season since the 1966-67 season and have brought joy and excitement to the entire state, while proving once again that the Packers are not only Wisconsin's favorite team, but America's team as well; and, be it further

SJR47,3,18 Resolved, That the senate chief clerk shall provide copies of this joint resolution to Green Bay Mayor Paul Jadin, to be shared with the residents of the city of Green Bay; Bob Harlan; Ron Wolf; Mike Holmgren; the team's play-off captains; and Rod Kresel, the President of the Green Bay Packer Fan Club (America's Pack).
