SJR49,1,42 Whereas, Solomon Juneau, Byron Kilbourn and George Walker established
3adjoining settlements in the early 19th century in the southeastern section of what
4is now the state of Wisconsin; and
SJR49,1,75 Whereas, those 3 settlements, Juneautown, Kilbourntown and Walker's Point,
6were joined and chartered by the Wisconsin territorial legislature as the City of
7Milwaukee; and
SJR49,1,88 Whereas, the charter took effect on January 31, 1846; and
SJR49,1,109 Whereas, during the past 150 years, the City of Milwaukee has evolved into one
10of the finer cities in the United States; and
SJR49,1,1311 Whereas, the City of Milwaukee is internationally known as the "City of
12Festivals" and is the home of the Great Circus Parade, Summerfest and 10 ethnic
13festivals; and
SJR49,1,1714 Whereas, from Bayview to Clarke Square; from Halyard Park to Brewer's Hill;
15from Riverwest to Walker's Point; from Sherman Park to Jackson Park; and from
16Washington Heights to Lindsay Park, Milwaukee is a city of strong neighborhoods;

1Whereas, Miller Brewing, Master Lock, Harley Davidson, Northwestern
2Mutual Life Insurance, Allen Bradley, A.O. Smith, Firstar Corporation, Universal
3Foods, Marshall & Ilsley, and many other large and small businesses call Milwaukee
4home; and
SJR49,2,85 Whereas, the combined annual attendance at Milwaukee's major cultural
6events and sites, including the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, the Milwaukee
7Repertory Theater, the Milwaukee Ballet, and the Milwaukee Art Museum, is over
81,000,000 people; and
SJR49,2,119 Whereas, the Ko-Thi Dance Company, the Trinity Irish Dancers and Theater
10X are 3 of the many Milwaukee performing art groups that have earned international
11reputations for excellence; and
SJR49,2,1412 Whereas, Milwaukee is home to the Brewers, the Bucks, the Admirals and the
13Wave, as well as to the Milwaukee Kickers Soccer Club — the largest soccer club in
14the United States, and the Petit National Ice Center; and
SJR49,2,1615 Whereas, nine colleges and universities are located within the City of
16Milwaukee; and
SJR49,2,1917 Whereas, Fortune magazine recognized Milwaukee's Choice Program as a
18viable educational alternative, and Financial World magazine recognized
19Milwaukee as one of the 10 best managed cities in the United States; and
SJR49,2,2120 Whereas, in 1996, the City of Milwaukee will be celebrating its 150th birthday;
21now, therefore, be it
SJR49,2,25 22Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the members of the
23Wisconsin legislature congratulate the residents of the fine City of Milwaukee as
24they celebrate their city's sesquicentennial anniversary and extend to Milwaukee
25and its citizens their best wishes for another prosperous 150 years; and, be it further

1Resolved, That the senate chief clerk shall provide a copy of this joint
2resolution to Mayor John Norquist of the City of Milwaukee, to the Milwaukee
3Common Council president and to each member of the Milwaukee Common Council.
