SJR52,1,1 1Relating to: proclaiming May 17, 18 and 19, 1996, "Syttende Mai Weekend".
SJR52,1,42 Whereas, Norway, which means "Northern Way", is the 5th largest country in
3Europe, covering 125,052 square miles, and has a population of approximately
44,000,000 and has the highest percentage of blue-eyed people in the world; and
SJR52,1,65 Whereas, "Syttende Mai", Norwegian for "May 17", celebrates the anniversary
6of the Norwegian Constitution declaring Norway's independence from Sweden; and
SJR52,1,87 Whereas, "Syttende Mai" is observed in many Norwegian communities
8throughout the United States; and
SJR52,1,139 Whereas, Wisconsin communities, such as Stoughton, Westby and Woodville,
10will celebrate "Syttende Mai" in many ways, including parades, Norwegian displays,
11Norwegian street music and dancers, "Syttende Mai" King and Queen presentations,
12"Syttende Mai" runs, special museum tours, choral concerts, church services and
13Norwegian drama; and
SJR52,1,1514 Whereas, thousands of Wisconsinites of Norwegian heritage will participate in
15these activities during the month of May; now, therefore, be it
SJR52,2,2 16Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the weekend of
17May 17, 18 and 19, 1996, is proclaimed "Syttende Mai Weekend" in the state of
18Wisconsin, and that all of the citizens of this state are declared honorary Norwegians

1for that weekend and are urged to observe the "Syttende Mai Weekend" with
2appropriate celebrations.
