1997 - 1998 LEGISLATURE
December 2, 1997 - Introduced by Representatives Wasserman and Otte. Referred
to Committee on Education.
AB642,1,3 1An Act to amend 118.33 (1) (e); and to create 118.30 (5) of the statutes; relating
2to:
the requirement that school boards administer statewide pupil
3assessments.
Analysis by the Legislative Reference Bureau
Current law requires every school board to administer statewide assessments
in the 4th, 8th and 10th grades. Beginning in the 2000-01 school year, each school
board operating high school grades must also administer a high school graduation
examination. (The 10th grade examination is not required to be administered after
the 2000-01 school year.) This bill authorizes a school board to exempt itself from
administering one or more of the examinations by adopting a resolution to that effect.
Under current law, a school board must develop alternative high school
graduation criteria for evaluating a pupil who has been excused from the high school
graduation examination. This bill provides that a school board need not develop such
alternative criteria for those pupils or for pupils who have not taken the high school
graduation examination because the school board has adopted a resolution
exempting itself from the requirement to administer the examination.
For further information see the state and local fiscal estimate, which will be
printed as an appendix to this bill.
