Analysis by the Legislative Reference Bureau
Current law prohibits any person from duplicating, by any means whatever, a
driver's license. Penalties for a violation range from a mandatory minimum
forfeiture of $200 for a first offense, up to a maximum penalty of a $2,000 fine and
imprisonment for 6 months for a 3rd or subsequent offense within 3 years.
This bill creates an exception to this prohibition. The bill allows licensed motor
vehicle dealers to reproduce a copy of a driver's license if the reproduction is done
according to rules promulgated by the department of transportation.
The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do
enact as follows:
