AJR32,1,32 Whereas, John Lyons Doyne was born on March 13, 1912, in Chicago, to Mae
3and James Doyne; and
AJR32,1,64 Whereas, while he was growing up he spent his summers in Milwaukee, living
5with his grandfather and his uncle "Mike" Lyons, who would become his idol and
6political mentor; and
AJR32,1,87 Whereas, John Doyne received his bachelor's degree in business
8administration and a law degree from Marquette University; and
AJR32,1,129 Whereas, he was elected as a democrat to the state assembly in his first try for
10public office in 1940, declining a military deferment to enlist in the navy in 1942,
11serving his country during World War II for 42 months, mainly in the South Pacific;
12and
AJR32,1,1513 Whereas, his political life included serving as deputy treasurer of Milwaukee
14County in 1953 and 1954, as county supervisor from 1954 to 1960 and as acting
15chairman and chairman of the Milwaukee County Board from 1958 to 1960; and
AJR32,1,1716 Whereas, he was elected Milwaukee County's first county executive in 1960 and
17was reelected for 3 terms, retiring in 1976; and

1Whereas, John Doyne always attracted attention as an easygoing man with a
2quick Irish wit, a broad smile and an infectious sense of humor; now, therefore, be

AJR32,2,7 4Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the members of the
5Wisconsin legislature express extreme sadness at the passing of John Lyons Doyne
6on January 29, 1997, and extend their condolences to his family and friends; and, be
7it further
AJR32,2,10 8Resolved, That the assembly chief clerk shall provide copies of this joint
9resolution to his wife, Jacqueline, and his children; John Doyne, Jr., William Doyne,
10Patricia Heinemann and Mary Doyne.
