AJR93,1,1 1Relating to: significant Wisconsin events.
AJR93,1,32 Whereas, because 1998 is Wisconsin's sesquicentennial year, it is a suitable
3time to remember some of the significant issues and events in this state's history; and
AJR93,1,94 Whereas, in the early statehood period slavery, banking and temperance were
5important issues; Wisconsin's politics were influenced by the fact that many of its
6leaders had moved from New York and New England to Wisconsin; and some of the
7important political events were the legislature's first meeting, on June 5, 1848, the
8enactment of a public school code in 1849 and the enactment of the Bond law for
9regulating the sale of liquor; and
AJR93,1,1310 Whereas, during the post-Civil-War era, Wisconsin matured into a modern
11state; dealt with such significant issues as temperance, foreign language instruction,
12railroad regulation and currency reform; and amended the state constitution to
13make legislative sessions biennial; and
AJR93,2,514 Whereas, during the Progressive era, the state developed a reputation for
15innovation and reform, as evidenced by such accomplishments as enacting the first

1workable income tax and the first worker's compensation act and being in the
2vanguard of the movement that began to provide equal rights for women; and during
3that era Robert M. LaFollette was Wisconsin's first presidential candidate and
4immigration from Europe was significant, although many of the new arrivals
5maintained their ethnic identities; and
AJR93,2,116 Whereas, during the middle of the 20th century, important issues were
7discrimination in housing and employment, the proper size and scope of state
8government, environmental problems and welfare programs; and among the
9accomplishments were the creation of a new school aid formula, a major legislative
10reapportionment and the enactment of a comprehensive consumer protection act;
11and
AJR93,2,1512 Whereas, during the current era health care and welfare reform, the business
13climate, taxation and education have been major issues; and important legislation
14on campaign finance, no-fault divorce, school finance, recycling and drunken driving
15was passed; now, therefore, be it
AJR93,2,18 16Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the members of the
17Wisconsin legislature urge all Wisconsin residents, during this sesquicentennial
18year, to learn more about their state's rich and admirable history; and, be it further
AJR93,2,20 19Resolved, That the assembly chief clerk shall provide a copy of this joint
20resolution to the Wisconsin Sesquicentennial Commission.
