AR24,1,2 1Relating to: the life and times of Chief Benjamin Winneshiek of the Ho-Chunk
2Nation.
AR24,1,43 Whereas, Benjamin W. Winneshiek was born in Dells Dam, Clark County,
4Wisconsin, on February 22, 1917, and died on May 6, 1998; and
AR24,1,75 Whereas, he proudly served as the traditional Tribal Chief of the Ho-Chunk
6Nation and made his home on the Indian Mission in Black River Falls, Wisconsin;
7and
AR24,1,108 Whereas, he attended the Neilsville Indian School and throughout his life
9worked with our natural resources in harvesting Christmas trees, sphagnum moss,
10cranberries and pulpwood; and
AR24,1,1311 Whereas, he served his country in the United States Army from 1940 to 1945
12and participated in the New Guinea campaign and in the Papua, Leyte and Luzon
13campaigns in the Philippines; and

1Whereas, he was the last tribal survivor of the Wisconsin 32nd Red Arrow
2Division and was awarded the Bronze Star for his bravery and actions during World
3War II; now, therefore, be it
AR24,2,8 4Resolved by the assembly, That the members of the Wisconsin assembly
5recognize the years of service of Chief Benjamin Winneshiek and note their
6appreciation for the contributions that he made to his people in the Ho-Chunk
7Nation, express their sorrow at his death and extend their condolences to his family
8and friends; and, be it further
AR24,2,11 9Resolved, That the assembly chief clerk shall provide a copy of this resolution
10to his daughters; Paula, Annie, Sadie and Rachael Winneshiek and Eunice Wamego;
11and to his sons; Clayton Winneshiek and Howard Swallow.
