AB554,1,3 1An Act to amend 36.27 (1) (a); and to create 36.27 (1) (b) of the statutes;
2relating to: tuition for resident undergraduates at the university of Wisconsin
3system and granting rule-making authority.

This bill directs the board of regents of the University of Wisconsin System,
beginning in the 2000-01 academic year, to establish academic fees for resident
undergraduates at a level not to exceed 40% of instructional costs.

The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do
enact as follows:
AB554, s. 1 4Section 1. 36.27 (1) (a) of the statutes is amended to read:
AB554,2,35 36.27 (1) (a) Subject to par. pars. (b) and (c), the board may establish for
6different classes of students differing tuition and fees incidental to enrollment in
7educational programs or use of facilities in the system. Except as otherwise provided
8in this section, the board may charge any student who is not exempted by this section

1a nonresident tuition. The board may establish special rates of tuition and fees for
2the extension and summer sessions and such other studies or courses of instruction
3as the board deems advisable.
AB554, s. 2 4Section 2. 36.27 (1) (b) of the statutes is created to read:
AB554,2,85 36.27 (1) (b) Beginning in the 2000-01 academic year, the board shall establish
6academic fees for resident undergraduates at a level not to exceed 40% of
7instructional costs. The board shall promulgate rules defining "instructional costs"
8for the purpose of this paragraph.
