AB734,1,3 1An Act to renumber 36.11 (2) (a); to amend 36.11 (2) (b); and to create 36.11
2(2) (ag) and 36.11 (2) (c) of the statutes; relating to: the authority of University
3of Wisconsin police officers to carry firearms.
Analysis by the Legislative Reference Bureau
Under current law, the board of regents of the University of Wisconsin System
has police power (concurrent with other authorized peace officers) over the property
subject to its jurisdiction and over certain other property contiguous to the
University of Wisconsin-Parkside campus. Current law also authorizes the board
of regents to employ or contract for police, who are empowered to preserve peace and
to make arrests for crimes or violations of certain rules relating to the University of
Wisconsin System. This bill authorizes a police officer employed or contracted for by
the board of regents for these purposes to possess a firearm while in the line of duty.
The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do
enact as follows:
AB734, s. 1 4Section 1. 36.11 (2) (a) of the statutes is renumbered 36.11 (2) (am).
AB734, s. 2 5Section 2. 36.11 (2) (ag) of the statutes is created to read:
AB734,1,76 36.11 (2) (ag) In this subsection, "campus police officer" means any police officer
7or police chief employed or contracted for by the board under par. (b).

1Section 3. 36.11 (2) (b) of the statutes is amended to read:
AB734,2,102 36.11 (2) (b) The board may employ police for the institutions and chiefs to head
3such police, or contract for police, all of whom shall be deemed peace officers under
4s. 939.22 (22) under the supervision and control of the appropriate chancellor or the
5chancellor's designees. Such Campus police officers shall meet the minimum
6standards established for other police officers by the law enforcement standards
7board or a comparable agency. Such Campus police officers shall preserve the peace
8on all property described under par. (a) (am), enforce all rules promulgated under
9this chapter and all other laws, and for that purpose the chancellor or the chancellor's
10designee may call for aid from such other persons as is deemed necessary.
AB734, s. 4 11Section 4. 36.11 (2) (c) of the statutes is created to read:
AB734,2,1312 36.11 (2) (c) A campus police officer may possess a firearm while in the line of
13duty.
