2of Wisconsin on the occasion of its sesquicentennial.
AJR9,1,53 Whereas, on July 26, 1848, our state founders had the foresight to establish, as
4the 4th act of the new state legislature "an institution of learning under the name
5and style of the University of Wisconsin"; and
AJR9,1,76 Whereas, from a first class of 17 students on February 5, 1849, the University
7of Wisconsin-Madison today enrolls more than 40,000 students annually; and
AJR9,1,118 Whereas, the University of Wisconsin-Madison is considered to be one of the
9most respected public universities in the world, consistently ranking among the best
10in terms of undergraduate academics, research and development and public service;

AJR9,1,1412 Whereas, the University of Wisconsin System was created on October 11, 1971,
13combining the University of Wisconsin and the Wisconsin state universities, under
14a single Board of Regents; and

1Whereas, the University of Wisconsin System constitutes a valuable and
2treasured resource for our state, providing higher educational opportunities to more
3than 150,000 undergraduate and graduate students statewide, as well as providing
4valuable assistance through University of Wisconsin-Extension offices in all 72
5counties; and
AJR9,2,86 Whereas, in 1904 university leaders defined a tradition known as the
7"Wisconsin Idea", a living doctrine that continues today, in which the services and
8resources of the university are shared with the citizens of Wisconsin; and
AJR9,2,129 Whereas, continuing education at the University of Wisconsin System provides
10valuable educational opportunities for people throughout Wisconsin, serving more
11than 280,000 adults and precollege youth for both personal growth and enrichment,
12and for professional development; and
AJR9,2,1613 Whereas, in its 150th year, the University of Wisconsin continues to serve as
14a catalyst for creative relationships and partnerships with schools, government,
15businesses and individuals across the state and nation and around the world; now,
16therefore, be it
AJR9,2,19 17Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the members of the
18Wisconsin legislature hereby thank and commend the University of Wisconsin for its
19achievements and contributions to the state of Wisconsin.
